Keeping Your Old Number When Your Line Gets a New Number

Updated by Ray

Overview

When your line gets a new number for iMessage, you can keep your old number as a text-only line, called a Relay line. People who know your old number can still text it, and those texts arrive in your Project Blue inbox.

How it works

  • Your new number is the one your iMessages go out from.

  • Your old number moves to Project Blue's SMS carrier and works as a text-only line. It sends and receives regular text messages (green bubbles), not iMessage.

  • Our team does the setup. We file your texting (10DLC) registration, move your number and set up the new line. You confirm your business details and we tell you when each step is done.

What happens

Project Blue web app or Chrome extension, to someone who texted your old number

The From line shows your old number. Reply as normal and it goes out from your old number as a text, in the same thread.

Project Blue web app or Chrome extension, choosing a line yourself

Open the From menu and pick the line you want. Choosing Relay sends from your texting number and keeps that conversation on it until you click Switch back.

The GoHighLevel conversation box

Replies go out from your iMessage line, your new number, as an iMessage. The contact sees it as a new conversation.

To reply from your old number, reply in Project Blue. In a GoHighLevel workflow, use the line selection override action and choose your old number.

Tell your contacts about your new number

  1. Email your contacts first with your new number.

  2. Then text in small batches, starting with the people who replied to you most recently.

  3. Each line can message up to 50 new contacts a day and send 15 messages every 10 minutes.

Good to know

  • Text-only lines don't have call forwarding. See Call Forwarding & Masking for how calls are set up on your iMessage line.

  • If a contact replies STOP to a text sent through Relay, they are blocked across your whole account. If they reply START, they are unblocked.
